Condom Conundrum: America, We’ve Got a Problem

Why are so few of us practicing safer sex?

Only 25 percent of heterosexual adults (between the ages of 18 and 59) used a condom for vaginal intercourse during their most recent sexual encounter, says a recent survey of sexual behavior in the United States. The findings, reported in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, are part of the larger U.S. National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior. The study polled 1,645 heterosexuals in 2009. Forty-eight percent of the participants were married, 27 percent were single and 10 percent were divorced or separated.

Study participants said condoms didn’t limit sexual pleasure or change the ability to reach an orgasm or maintain an erection. Twenty-two percent of the women and 27.5 percent of the men reported using condoms during their last sexual experience.
