Los Angeles Becomes The Next City to Enforce Strict Vaccine Mandate

Los Angeles becomes the next city to enforce a strict vaccine mandate. The city of angels now requires that individuals provide proof of vaccination to enter restaurants, theaters, venues, and more. The new order is one of the strictest in the country.

The mandate went into effect due to the rise of COVID-19 cases. As the nation’s second-largest city, this mandate was necessary. Last year, California was losing 500 people per day due to Covid. As a result, Los Angeles’ hospitals were overfilled, and medical professionals were overwhelmed. The city brought in refrigerated trucks because morgues were at capacity. In LA county, about 10 million people received at least one COVID-19 vaccine or both vaccines.

Vaccine Requirments

Last month LA City Council voted that anyone over the age of 12 be fully vaccinated to enter businesses. In addition, anyone with religious or medical exemptions will need to provide a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of entering an establishment. Even though the new rule went into effect on Monday, officials won’t enforce it until November 29th, 2021. The first offense is just a warning, but the second one will result in a $1000 to $5000 fine.

Hopefully, the new mandate encourages people to get vaccinated. “Vaccinating more Angelenos is our only way out of this pandemic, and we must do everything in our power to keep pushing those numbers up,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. But, unfortunately, the new ordinance has loopholes. For instance, most retailers will not require vaccination cards from shoppers, but it applies to malls, which house retail stores. Not to mention, many businesses such as yoga studios suffered due to the pandemic, and many owners are anxious to see how the new mandate will go – will they lose business because of it? With the new mandate, I can’t help but wonder what this means for employees? We saw time and time again of anti-vaxxers harassing or assaulting them.
