Morehouse College Launches Black Men’s Research Institute

Morehouse College launches Black Men’s Research Institute. According to the AJC, the institute will “study the cultural, economic, personal and social outcomes of issues affecting Black men, particularly where disparities exist in the world.” The institute received grant funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Next, the Black Men’s Research Institute will hire an executive director and establish an advisory council to shape future goals.

“As a college dedicated to advancing knowledge of Black men’s lives, Morehouse is thankful for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s investment that enables us to establish the BMRI,” said Kendrick Brown, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Morehouse College. “The institute will be a positive force for promoting richer, more nuanced understandings of how Black men affect and are influenced by their communities.”

The chair of the college’s humanities division, Clarissa Myrick-Harris, stated that they wanted a place that wouldn’t just “study Black men.” The BMRI will help a Black man and his experiences. In addition, the institute teamed up with the Africana Studies and History department at Morehouse. Additionally, this partnership will help develop new courses and curricula for a minor and online certification program in Black masculinities studies.

Deeper Look Into Black Men’s Research Institute’s Objective

As we stated before, the BMRI will dive deep into Black men’s experiences. It will examine the disparities in education, employment, income, and life expectancy. Furthermore, the institute will examine how Black men overcome obstacles such as racism. This new institute will provide a more inclusive and authentic education about Black masculinities.

Lastly, it is crucial to understand how Black men and boys navigate racism, gender identities, and more. I am incredibly excited to see all of the awesome and mighty things from the institute. What are your thoughts about the new institute? Comment below.
