3 Important FAQs About the Spread of Hep C

You can’t give someone HCV through casual contact

Q: What are some ways hep C is not spread?
A: Hep C is not spread by kissing, hugging, sneezing, coughing, or sharing food, eating utensils, or glasses.
Q: Can a person spread hep C to his or her family or acquaintances?
A: It’s possible that hep C could be spread by sharing personal items (razors, toothbrushes or clippers), if there is blood present—even tiny amounts that you might not be able to see. To be safe, do not share any personal items and make sure that any open cuts or wounds are covered.
Q: Can a person spread hep C to his or her sex partners?
A: Although the hep C virus can be passed during sex (if blood is exposed), it is uncommon. If a person has only one, long-term steady sexual partner, the chance is very low that he or she will give hep C to that person through sexual activity. However, having multiple sex partners or HIV or engaging in rough sex (where blood exposure might occur) can increase the risk of spreading the virus during sex.
