World AIDS Day: Just the Facts

How’s your HIV/AIDS knowledge?

We want an AIDS-free generation, but first we must know the facts (and spread that knowledge):
The rate of new HIV infections among black folks in the United States is nearly eight times higher than that of white people.
One out of every five people with HIV don’t know they are infected.
We are 12 percent of the U.S. population, but we account for 47 percent of new HIV infections each year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African Americans with HIV are least likely to receive regular care and effective treatment.
African-American women make up 13 percent of all new HIV infections.
Sixty-four percent of all women living with HIV are African American.
African-American men who have sex with men account for 72 percent of new HIV infections among black men.
An estimated 1 in 16 black men and 1 in 32 black women in this country will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime.
Know your status. Get tested.
