The burden of being superwomen – download the handout to share with a friend! This conceptual framework is commonly referred to as The Superwoman Schema (SWS); it explores the experiences of women, with an emphasis on Black women, as we attempt to exceed societal expectations and defy stereotypes.
What Black Women Should Know About Cancer
Black women face a troubling reality when it comes to cancer: while overall cancer rates in the U.S. are declining, Black women continue to experience disproportionately high mortality rates, particularly with breast cancer. Despite being diagnosed at lower rates than white women, Black women are more likely to face late-stage diagnoses, aggressive forms of the disease, and systemic barriers to care. Conversations like Pink Table Talk: Black Women and Breast Cancer highlight these disparities, shedding light on the urgent need for better screening access, earlier detection, and culturally competent healthcare.
The data is clear—progress in cancer treatment isn’t benefiting everyone equally. When Cancer Rates Drop, But Not for Black Women explores why these gaps persist, calling attention to the structural inequities that keep Black women at a higher risk. By understanding these challenges, advocating for change, and demanding inclusive research, we can work toward a future where cancer outcomes improve for all.
