11 Signs Your Relationship Is Dysfunctional

Every relationship has problems, but are you starting to wonder if yours is worth saving? Here are the signs that your situation is dysfunctional and needs a major overhaul.

  1. You point fingers. When something negative happens, y’all play the blame game rather than seek a solution together.
  2. There is a power imbalance. One of you holds all the cards and isn’t afraid to play them to get what you want. That’s not a relationship, that’s a dictatorship.
  3. Threats of abandonment. You never really feel secure, because the worry that he is going to leave you is ever present.
  4. You harbor resentment. Whether it’s that he doesn’t help around the house or doesn’t treat you with respect, there’s something about him that you resent, which often leads to you respecting him less.
  5. There’s no communication. You should be able to have productive, adult conversations. If you can’t, how can you tackle the obstacles that pop up?
  6. You feel hopeless. When you think about your future with your partner, you don’t see anything good. Or anything at all.
  7. You’re walking on eggshells. You should never feel like you’re making yourself small and quiet to avoid conflict.
  8. Someone is disloyal. Whether it’s you or him who is stepping out, if you feel the need to seek intimacy outside your situation, then it’s obviously not working for you.
  9. You have no joy. While you cannot ever count on someone else to make you happy, you should be able to say you have joy when your partner is in your life. If you can’t, then why bother?
  10. You fight dirty. If things have devolved to the point where you are not above preying on each other’s insecurities and pushing each other’s buttons in the worst way, it’s time to part.
  11. You are not yourself. No relationship should require you to be someone other than your full, authentic self. If he requests it, or even just makes you feel like it’s necessary, you’re in the wrong place.
