How the Affordable Care Act Is Already Making a Difference
Though the Affordable Care Act what U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius calls “the biggest transformation in health care in 50 years, particularly in communities of color,” hasn’t rolled out completely just yet, here’s where it’s already making a difference:
71 million Americans (including 7 million African Americans) have access to preventive services (think: flu shots, blood pressure checks, mammograms, colonoscopies, well-woman visits) without spending a dime out of pocket.
115 million Americans don’t have to worry their benefits will disappear due to lifetime caps.
5.5 million African-American women will keep coverage for preventive services.
2.4 million African-American seniors will keep coverage for preventive services.
$5.7 billion saved by seniors on prescriptions.
3.1 million young adults (to age 26) are still on their parents’ health insurance coverage. This number includes 509,000 African-American young people and nearly 1 million Latinos.
