Last month Lyons Magnus recalled 53 nutrition drinks, including Premier Protein, Oatly, and Glucerna drinks. Now, they have added over 30 more drinks to the call-back list. The reasoning is because of potential botulism contamination.
“This recall is being conducted due to the potential for microbial contamination, including from the organisms Cronobacter sakazakii and Clostridium botulinum,” the FDA said in a release. “Although Clostridium botulinum has not been found in products, consumers are warned not to consume recalled products even if they do not look or smell spoiled.”
In addition, consumers shouldn’t drink any products passed their sell-by-date.Â
What is Clostridium Botulinum and its Symptoms
Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic, rod-shaped spore-forming bacterium that produces a protein with characteristic neurotoxicity. According to the FDA, Clostridium botulinum can bring on severe food poisoning anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consumption of a contaminated product.
Symptoms may include:
- Double or blurred vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty swallowing
- Muscle weakness
Botulism poisoning can result in death from respiratory paralysis.
What is Cronobacter and its Symptoms
Cronobacter (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) is a bacteria found in various dry foods, including powdered infant formula, powdered milk, herbal teas, and starches. It has also been found in water. The FDA warns that Cronobacter sakazakii causes bloodstream infections and meningitis. According to the CDC, infants, seniors over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems are the most susceptible to serious illness.
Illness from Coronbacter looks different depending on the person. For instance, infants will experience fever, excessive crying, and low energy. Adults will typically experience diarrhea and UTIs.
