Clinical Trials In the Black Community
Did you know that clinical trials can benefit us? Racial and ethic minorities currently nearly 40% of the US population. But estimates place the rate of inclusion in research studies between 2-16%.Â
But when we talk about our community the numbers get much smaller. Black participants made of less than 5% of the trials 24 of 31 cancer approved since 2015. Yet a 2019 report from the American Cancer Society says we have a 14% higher risk from dying from cancer.  Â
One of the challenges is that some drugs may not be as effective on us as they are on us as they are on Caucasian patients. This will become even more important as the population continues to shift. By 2044, racial minorities will become The New Majority so we need to consider how that will impact our health. Clinical health and genomic studies will definitely impact our future. Â
