The Life of DJ Kay Slay & His Impact on Hip-Hop

On August 14th, 1966, Keith Grayson was born in New York City. He started as a graffiti artist and performed hip-hop in his spare time. During that time, he was notably featured in the 1983 hip-hop documentary “Style Wars.” Grayson admits that he didn’t set out to become a DJ. “It was just something to do that was fun and that I enjoyed doing,” Grayson told Forbes in 2019. He released his first project, “The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1,” in 2003. Later, he went on to share multiple studio albums throughout his career. In 2021, he released his latest project, “The Soul Controller.” In addition, he released over 500 mixtapes. In 1993, he started selling mixtapes on the street corners in NY’s West Village. His mixtapes featured artists like Eminem, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z.

Grayson’s nickname was The Drama King because, for the last two decades, he took part in hosting “The Drama Hour” on Hot 97. His Hot 97 family took time to remember his legacy and impact on hip-hop. “Hot 97 is shocked and saddened by the loss of our beloved DJ Kay Slay,” their statement began. “We cherish the many memories created through the twenty-plus years he dedicated to the ‘Drama Hour.'”

“A cultural icon, Kay Slay was more than just a DJ; to us, he was family and a vital part of what made Hot 97 the successful station it is today,” the statement continued. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and fans worldwide, and we will always and forever celebrate The Drama King’s legacy.”

It is truly a sad day in the hip-hop community. Grayson garnered millions of fans worldwide. Black Health Matters sends our condolences to his family and friends.
